The Rand

The Rand is South Africa's currency - there are about five Rand to the Canadian dollar these days - and I just discovered its origin in my trusty "A History of South Africa":

The Witwatersrand, which is the watershed between the Orange and Limpopo river systems (Johannesburg and Pretoria are located here), was the area where a huge gold "reef" was discovered in 1886. Known simply as The Rand, it was soon home to the largest gold mining operation in the world, producing a quarter of global output.

Hi Pip,
It is SO great to read your updates and view your gorgeous pictures. It is wonderful to read your commentary about your experiences. I was thinking of starting a blog too, to share photos, etc. How is your 30th year going so far??
Mat says hello; he is reading your blog too.
Lots of love, fiona:)
PS- school starts in two days!

Hi Pip!
I was just thinking that I should finally get my act together and call you now that I'm finally back in the country and... well... I guess I'll have to wait another 5 months or so. Sounds like you are having an amazing cultural experience. Keep safe and I'll keep you in my prayers!
Love
Krista

We all miss you Pip! Looking at your photos, I can't help but suggest that "Hippos near sunset" looks somewhat like Nelson Ave on a warm summer Sunday afternoon ;-)

First day of high school for Maya today. Tragedy struck yesterday when a good friend died after experiencing extasy for the first time. Brutal.

Anil thinks that we should all move to Spain. I'm kind of with him on that.

Love to hear more from you soon Pip. I'm thinking that you can turn this adventure into a Simon Winchester, Pico Iyer, Eric Newby or Jan Morris travelogue!

Take care,
P, K, M & A

Pipster,

This is a wicked blog. I've only just found time to start reading it. So now that I have, I think you should listen to all these anonymous folk and update it more often.

Take care of yourself,
Patrick
